Senior Software Development Engineer, Amazon Security

Are you passionate about building software systems that operate at massive scale and directly impact millions of customers? As a Software Development Engineer III at Amazon, you will lead the design, development, and delivery of complex software systems that solve challenging technical problems. You will work across the full software lifecycle — from defining product strategy to implementation, deployment, and maintenance — while guiding your team toward architectural decisions that balance performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability. In this role, you will tackle problems where the technology strategy is not yet defined, navigating conflicting constraints to deliver solutions that are simple, extensible, and secure. Your technical judgment and collaborative approach will shape the direction of your team's software, and your code will set the standard that others follow. If you are a thoughtful engineer who thrives on solving ambiguous problems and mentoring others, we want to hear from you. Key job responsibilities - Lead the design and delivery of multi-engineer software projects, owning your team's architectural direction and ensuring systems are well-designed, performant, and secure. - Collaborate with peers on related teams to define technology strategy for problems where the business direction is understood but the technical approach is not, balancing short-term needs against long-term extensibility. - Write exemplary code that demonstrates best practices in organization, clarity, error handling, and documentation, while driving adoption of engineering best practices across your team. - Mentor and coach engineers on your team and beyond, providing technical guidance and career development support to strengthen overall team capability. - Design and maintain operational excellence for your systems, including alarms, telemetry, runbooks, and retrospective processes, while proactively identifying and resolving root causes of recurring issues. A day in the life You might start your morning reviewing a technical design document from a teammate, offering feedback that strengthens the architecture before implementation begins. Later, you could be deep in code, building a critical component of a new service while applying generative artificial intelligence tools to accelerate your workflow. After lunch, you join a cross-team discussion to align on an interface contract that your systems depend on. You wrap up by pairing with a junior engineer on a tricky debugging session, turning it into a coaching moment. About the team Our team builds software that matters to Amazon's customers. We value technical depth, collaborative problem-solving, and a culture where every engineer's perspective is heard. We believe that the best solutions come from inclusive teams that challenge assumptions and learn from each other.
